I hope you are enjoying your summer and finding time to relax as we slowly transition into the fall.

A few years ago, the majority of my workday was spent traveling in airports. One of my sources of airport entertainment was overhearing phone conversations that were consistently about one topic: people issues. No matter who I overheard, if they were on the phone, they were discussing the challenges of someone on their team. While anecdotal, I found this to be a fascinating pattern highlighting the complexities of managing human behavior.

When I read the article, 10-Smart-Not-Soft-Skills for Leaders, I was reminded of my informal airport data. The author outlines 10 “smart” skills to help managers navigate what she says is the one variable that always creates complexity: people.
